How to get from a (broken) salad spinner to a zoötroop

If your salad spinner is broken, you can always make a zoötroop out of it. 
Our salad spinner is not spinning anymore. Probably there is a piece of the turning mechanisme broken. So if the salad spinner, cant spin dry the salad you can:  1. throw it away or 2. fix the spinning device and turn the salad spinner into a  zoötroop.

Below you will find in a view steps how to fix your salad spinner and to transform it into a zoötroop.

 Step 1. Cover some area's and leave some area's open where you can see trough.

Step 2. Develope different animations and try which animations fits your zoötroop the best.

Step 3. How to fix the lid. Before you can fix a broken object, it is importent to do some research about the product. What is it made of? and what is broken? So analize product and get to the essence of your own productis the easiest by 'opening up' your product and to find out. Find out how your product is made and what is maybe missing or really broken.  After we openend up our salad spinner, we could really see what was broken and ever we found out there was a part missing. It was only hard to find out what was actually missing. In the below picture (pic. 5) you can see the taxonomi of our salad spinner. From here we found out what was missing and broken.

Step 4. Let other people work with your (broken) product to see what happens so you can develope new ideas.

The turning mechanism of our salad spinner is broken. After some research we did some different attempts how to fix the lid and how to make the spinner, spin again. Easiest way is to put a pen into the hole of the spinner and spin the pen by hand. Spinning the lid by pen is still not the perfect way. The hard way is to develope gears and still turn it by hand. See below movie attempt by hand and pen.

Step 5. Cut out the little lines so it opens the vision of the animation. Wear safety glasses, the plastic can fly around. See picture 6 and 7.

Step 6. To make a new handle for the salad spinner.
Design your handle, the way you like it and what fits your zoötroop. See picture 8 and 9.

Step 7. Place the handle, check if your animation is working or change the animation. See picture 9 and the movie of the animation.

Step 8. Let other people try your zoötroop and see if you can change something to make                       your zoötroop better. Let people give you feedback and use it so your product gets the proper look and use.

Step 9. Use the advise from your users and try to adjust your zoötroop to there wishes. Like to paint it dark, so the user can see the animation more clear. Also the design gets better and it looks like a better product.
